Contributiors Profile
Perception of the authors personal integrity can be from:
- What the author says(text-internal resources, i.e. only when we read/ have read the authors text)
- The way the author introduces hi-/herself to the readers(text-external/ pre-textual resources) when the author provides information about him/herself
o in his/her profile
o in acknowledgements
The contributors profile: framing the author within a recognizable context
- The indication of the contributors name at the top of the first: page : not significant if the author is not an academic celebrity
- the authors name is usually linked to a text-external section (i.e., a footnote, a short paragraph at the end of the text, a line after the authors name, etc). Here different pieces of information from and about the author can combine:
o institutional information
o extra bio-biographical information
o contact information
- These different types of information perform different communicative functions and convey specific ideas as to the authors identity.
Institutional Information: introducing the author
-Instituional information has a primarily informative function: by positioning the author in relation to a specific and recognizable institution, it reveals the his/her institutional/ professional self
- Dr X.Y.
Professor of Law. University of Ch8icago Research student, University of Glasgow.
Bank of Italy, Research Department
European Council
Independent Researcher
Tehe indication of institutional affiliation is relevant when authors are affiliated to several institutions: by selectin/foregrounding one of them for their profile they implicitly establish the way they wish to be perceived.
Ex. Authors curriculum vitae: Dr.J.F.:
Jeffrey&Susan Brotman Professor of Law, University of Washington Law School
Bar of Massachusetts
Bar of the Supreme Court of the Unites States
Affiliation in the authors profile for her articles:
Brotman Professor of Law, University of Washington
Like other professional communities academics, largely contruct their identities in terms of affliliation, whether institutional, disciplinary or to a particular school of thouth.
-.Institutional: related to the institution(University, funding institution, the publisher, etc i.e., the organization within which the researcher is framed)
-Disciplinary: related to the discipline(or the edxoteric community, cf. Myers 1989, 1990) about which the researcher is doing his research
-School of thought(sub-disciplinary): related to the specific methodologies which distinguish several sub-disciplines(or esoteric communities)within a broad discipline
When presenting a research article, I could choose to foreground / stress one of the following aspects about myself(and my work):
- Researcher for a project funded by the Provincia di Bergamo
- Researcher of the Foreign Language Dept., Universtiy of Bergamo
- Member of a research group on Specialized Discourse
- Researcher in the research unit directed by Prof. X on arbitration mediation
1. RESEARCHER FOR A PROJECT FUNDED BY THE PROVINCIA DI BERGAMO
- Emphasis on funding body/institution
- Addressed(also) to a broad audience(not necessarily specialized)
- Implying the practical usefulness of my research, and my gratitude to the funding body
2. RESEARCHER OF THE FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPT., UNIVERSITY OF BERGAMO
- Emphasis on the institutional-academic affiliation
-Addressed to a generi( exoteric) specialized audience(in Foreign Languages, i.e., exoteric audience)
- Implying may scientific validity (since I am a part of the University world)
3. MEMBER OF A RESEARCH GROPU ON SPECIALIZED DISCOURSE
- Emphasis on the disciplinary affliation
-Addressed to a specialized audience(in Specialized Discourse, i.e., esoteric audience)
-Implying the relevance of my work(only) to that specific discipline
4. RESEARCHER IN THE RESEARCH UNIT DIRECTED BY PROF. X ON ARBITRATION-MEDIATION
-Emphasis on the sub-disciplinary affiliation (school of thought)
-Addressed to a specialize and specific audience(who already know Prof. X and his work, i.e., esoteric audience)
Academic identity is defined by the loyalty shown to a certain theoretical and bibliographical tradition within disciplines
In the light of this claim which of the foru examples above the most specific discipline
2. Additional bio-Bibliographical Information: promoting the author
A tendency towards self promotion in the informative bits concerning the authors acadim career, research and bibliography.
3. CONTACT INFORMATION: INTERACTING WITH THE COMMUNITY
a. In the profile we may find the contributors surface address(usually institutional s.a.) or e-mail address
b. This inromation impolicitly encourages readers to send feedback, comments or opinions, virtually favourin interaction.
c. This open attitude is indivative of the authors social identity, thus, contact information has a social and interactional function: BY IMPLYING THE AUTHORS OPEN AND INTERACTIVE ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE READERS, IT REVEALS THE AUTHORS COOPERATIVE
